David Benatar: Antinatalism in a nutshell

Imagine that you had a magic wand. If you tapped a stone with this wand the stone would become sentient and thus capable of experiencing both pain and pleasure. As a sentient stone, it would, for example, require and enjoy hydration, but would experience parching thirst when not exposed to water for protracted periods and would drown if covered in water. It would enjoy the warm rays of sun on a lovely day, but it would experience hypothermia if the environment became too cold and hyperthermia if it became too hot.
Should you tap the stone, should you not, the stone is no interest in becoming sentient and it will suffer and die if it does. Surely you should leave all stones unturned. Creating sentient frankenstones would be a horror show.
In important ways, tapping the stone is like procreation. You create a sentient being where there was none a being that is liable to the vicissitudes of fate, a being capable of suffering unspeakably, a being that will die. If procreation were not so natural and normal it would be seen for the tragedy and travesty that it is.
That is the very short version of why I am an antinatalist and why you should be too.
